It is possible to make a quilt without any handwork; everything can be done on the sewing machine. Piecing and applique
are, of course, done a block at a time. For your first quilt, start with something small and simple. Some of the Quilt
in a Day books are good for beginners, because the instructions are very detailed. Their Log Cabin, Irish Chain, Trip
Around the World, Rail Fence are all especially good for beginners. You can quilt on your regular home machine, but
large quilts do get bulky and hard to handle. There are a number of techniques for reducing the bulk. Besides the
books & websites others have mentioned, you might want to take a look at "Machine Quilting in Sections"
by Marti Mitchell. She's gives several techniques for reducing the bulk of a large quilt; most of the ideas are
documented in other places, but I haven't seen anything else that describes all of them in one place. I've used a
couple of her techniques -- before I bought the book. I've documented one such project at

time we got the thing fused, I needed a hammer and pliers to get a needle through the fused layers. That ended our
attempt at quilting. I've acquired a several books on quilting over the years, and always drool over the pictures, but
never go any further, for several reasons, primarily health - I can't do a lot of hand work. But, the other day I saw
an article about making blocks and completing them individually - right through the backing, and then assembling the
quilt. Unfortunately, I was in a hurry or something, because I don't have any idea where I saw it. Now the big
question - does anyone recall seeing anything like this? Thanks (and I'm not usually this ditzy, honest) Sharon

Posted by Cats on Tue Oct 17, 2006 2:27 PM    Post subject: Re: Metal bobbins

If you don't get any takers why not use the old bobbins to hold small amounts of thread for applique projects? I
keep all the colours I need in a tiny case by winding thread onto old bobbins. A small plastic soap dish with a snap
lid will hold about 15 bobbins - that is usually more colours than I need. Or I thread them all on a single long
spool to keep them together. It makes it easy to take everything I need around with me, and those little pink Bobbin
Buddies prevent the threads tangling. Bobbins are a lot less "bulky" than normal thread spools. I mark my
bobbins so they don't get mixed up. Any bobbins not used in my machine (old, damaged, incorrect size/style) are
marked and used to hold threads for handsewing and travel kits. -- Cheryl & the Cats in OZ o o

Does anyone here know of a good place (hopefully online!) that sells cotton or linen red/white tea towels? I have some
cute redwork that I want to applique onto a few towels for my sister. I don't want it to be "too nice" or
she'll put it in a cupboard and not use it, hence the applique rather than actual stitching. I emailed one place
- I think it may have been Dakota Cabin Quilts - and never received a reply to my query of "how many of these can
you fit into a Global Priority mailer?" So does anyone have a shop they would like to rave about? I want
to get started on these - they have to travel from Scotland to Alaska for Christmas/birthday time (we all have December
birthdays) - and that's once I have the towels to start my project! -- Jo in Scotland

I'd like to know as well. In fact, I'd be happy to find a resource for the toweling so I can make my own - unless I
could buy a bunch of tea towels for less than most of LQS charge for them. I've never found any fabric at TSWLTH that I
thought would be suitable. -- Pauline Northern California "Johanna Gibson" <jgibson@NOSPAMtesco.net>

I know there's already a "cleaning iron" post going around, but this is different. I was doing applique with
WU and other similar sticky stuff. I was very, very careful but ...you know the drill. I got some of the sticky on my
new iron (stainless bottom, not teflon). My husband went to iron a shirt, saw the stuff and took steel wool to the
bottom of my iron. There are a few little scrapes. And now I got it sticky again in the same place and can't get the
stuff to come off. I paid $40 for this iron expecting it to last a while. Grrrrrrrrrr. Any suggestions on getting off
the sticky? And is the bottom now permanently ruined from the steel wool? And what can I do with this t hing to keep the
bottom clean because it seems to be constantly in a sorry state. Wrinkledly, Sunny

whatever they are called things where you put on a second bottom/base to your iron... Tricia Sunny wrote:

I have a cheap Black & Decker iron with the shiny metal bottom. I have many, many times scrubbed the bottom of it
with steel wool when it gets all black and ucky from too much starch, fusibles, etc. If it looks like nothing else will
fix your iron, you haven't much to lose with going after it with an energetic application of steel wool. End with some
fine steel wool to get the shiny back. I think it will be okay, but YMMV. Good luck. Leslie & The Furbabies in

I don't know if this will work for you or not, but it did seem to help me when I guped up my iron a long time ago. I
put the iron to its lowest heat setting and then rubbed it off against a piece of denium. There was enough resistance
against the now warmed glue to remove it to the muslin. It took a bit but eventually I got it all off. julia

I hate it when the time comes to go on a trip -like a road trip, when it would be an excellent opportunity to do
handwork and you have no project of the right kind going! I just finished my apliqued dresden plates - the aplique
part at least - debating whether to do the traditional blanket stitch around it or not. I will need a new project for
those ocasions... Hope you got to take your top and do the aplique! Kellie J. Berger wrote: [quote:de17b1e634]headed

I don't know much about little girl dresses so can't help you with that project. But the next time you make a quilt with
a night sky, use that new tool to set crystals in the sky. It is really dramatic. I have also seen them use in the

Anyhow. I just set a swath of genuine (?) Swarovski (?) crystals across a tee shirt for DD with it. It's wonderful,
easy, fun and truly blingy. Since, in today's notion of style, too much is never enough, I've just finished a dress for

don't know if the 2 year-old is delighted with pockets but thought they might be - so, I added a pocket and put a Mickey

Well, thank you. There's a crazy quilt in my future. I always pilfer through the remnants bin at any fabric store
picking up wonderful little pieces of things I couldn't possibly buy a yard of. I added about 1/8 of a yard of royal
blue silk on Friday, ummm. Probably some experimenting is needed here. We will want to know if the heat set sparkles

Posted by Cats on Sat Oct 21, 2006 7:17 AM    Post subject: Re: channel applique

It's just a form of reverse applique. Layer two fabrics both right sides up, and then draw a line (or picture) on the
top fabric. Cut along the line. Turn a tiny seam on both cut edges (either side of the original drawn line) and you
will have about 1/4" of the bottom fabric showing through. If the bottom fabric is black and the top fabric is
multi colour you have a stained glass effect. The more common/traditional form of stained glass reverse applique
would have the black fabric on top and you would cut holes in the black (turning under the raw edges) to show the

Thank you Cheryl, that was a beautiful explanation. Sunny Cats wrote: [quote:e661d2b35b]It's just a form of reverse
applique. Layer two fabrics both right sides up, and then draw a line (or picture) on the top fabric. Cut along the
line. Turn a tiny seam on both cut edges (either side of the original drawn line) and you will have about 1/4" of
the bottom fabric showing through. If the bottom fabric is black and the top fabric is multi colour you have a stained
glass effect. The more common/traditional form of stained glass reverse applique would have the black fabric on top and
you would cut holes in the black (turning under the raw edges) to show the colour from beneath. -- Cheryl & the

Hi, I used two Japanese prints -- the main one with cranes and volcanoes and the others more toned down -- for a
convergence quilt. I used that as the basis for a wallhanging for my mom. You can see the end result here:

Posted by frood on Fri Jun 30, 2006 9:00 PM    Post subject: Halloween Swap!

As many of you know, I have hosted an annual Halloween fabric swap for 147 years now. At this point, I have a ton of
Halloween fabrics (under heavy guard by the gargoyles and WoW toons), so I don't really need more. A temptress whom I
will not name has tried to lure me down that path with a new A. Henry print she showed me, but my resolve is firm!
However, a woman from my guild told me about a Halloween *block* swap she participated in, and how great it was, and
that sounded like fabulous fun to me! Not to mention a chance to use up some of my fabrics! Here's what I'm thinking,
and you can let me know if you are interested. If enough are interested, I'll finalize rules and post them here. Any
size block would be fine. Any style of block (paper pieced, applique, traditional piecing). Any embellishments should
be washable or removeable (I like to *use* my Halloween quilts). If the majority don't care about washability, I could
be bribed to change this one. Each person would send enough blocks so each person in the swap gets one. For example,
if 10 people sign up, you send 9 blocks (keep one for yourself). You get back the same number of blocks as you send,
one from each other person in the swap. Blocks could be all the same, or not. Some people don't like making 10 blocks
all the same, so why torture them (except as a hobby). Each person would commit to following through on the swap.
Stuff happens, but you would be responsible to inform the Swap Hostess (me) if you must drop out. Each person will
commit to putting forth their best effort for their blocks. Last minute, slap-it-together blocks are no fun for others.
I'm not expecting Expert Blocks, just do your best. If a zillion people are interested, I may break it down into
groups, so no one has to make a zillion blocks. I'm thinking of a deadline of sending in blocks around mid-September.

Okay.... will reply here in case anyone else is interested. Smart and Final has a couple of different types of non-
terry kitchen towels in stock. 1. White with very narrow (2 heavy threads) red stripes every (generous) inch.
Package of 6 for $6.55 plus tax. These are labeled as Glass cleaning towels, aka "bar towels", measure
16" x 28", hemmed edges if not selvedge. I have used some of these to put applique on to demonstrate the
idea. They are really nice towels. 2. "Flour Sack" towels. These are huge, 28" x 29". Very
tightly woven white cotton. This is the fabric that really is made for flour sacks. Hemmed if not selvedge. 2 package
sizes.... 3 for $3.99 or 12 for $13.15 (plus tax). I also have and use these towels. Planned to do embroidery on
them for gifts but ended up using a bunch of them in the kitchen. (For you SCAdians, I also use them as
"napkins" in the event kit. <G> ) Pati, in Phx Kate G. wrote: [quote:0ee11af63c]Wasn't it you who was

View entire thread: Question about batiks
Posted by Susan Laity Price on Sun Aug 27, 2006 5:27 PM    Post subject: Re: Question about batiks

I usually prewash all fabrics but I always prewash batiks. Often I will pretest batiks individually in a bucket of
water. If the water shows just a little color I will toss the fabric into the machine and wash regularly. If there is a
lot of color I will treat the load with Retayne. Anytime I want to save time and skip prewashing I remember the call of
desperation I received from a friend. She had just completed a masterpiece. It was a very involved appliqued urn of
flowers with a beautiful blue bird circling above. She had spent all winter on the handquilting. It was time for our
guild show and she wanted to freshen the quilt in preparation for entering it. As she spritzed it with water the blue
bird began to run down the background fabric. She had been up all night trying everything she could to remove the blue
from the background. Nothing worked except bleach and that had removed the slight ecru color from the background fabric.
Her masterpiece did not make it to the show that year. She had to take all the handquilting out. Remove the flowers and
urn from the background (fortunately she could do that in one piece) and applique them to another background. Hard
lesson learned. Susan On Sat, 26 Aug 2006 18:48:25 -0700, "Trixie" <no_spam@no_spam.com> wrote:

and it ran when it was washed. I would really, really like to make a quilt with batiks. So, honestly, is it common for
them to run? Is there any way to predict which ones will run? All advice will be greatly appreciated. Trixie

I dunno. What if you draw up an uneven nine patch block (slanted at the same angle as the Chevy bow tie)? Seems to me
you could end up with the center row being the Chevy bow tie and the top and bottom rows being the
"framing"..... Of course, how that works on the edges might get sort of interesting. Alternating blocks in
red and black, so that the colors alternate: black background, red bow tie alternating with red background, black bow
tie..... Although it does sound rather like by the time you do *that*, a Dale Earnhardt "3" is going to be
called for *somewhere* in the quilt, probably as applique......maybe just one random block...... :) --pig On 7/10/06

Posted by Debra on Sat Oct 14, 2006 2:57 AM    Post subject: Quilty visit with Mom

Mom and I don't get much time to visit anymore, so when we do we each have to show the other what fun thing we are
working on, or planning. Yesterday when I arrived at her place she had a nice set of 7 or 8 fabrics and a book out
showing the quilt she is planning to make. We both agree that one aqua fabric does go with one of the other darker
prints, but it has the potential to either be the zinger of the quilt or the fabric that sticks out like a sore thumb.
I think she is going to have to make a practice block to find out which it will be. I had taken a big bag of some
fabrics and a couple of applique block drawings to get her opinion on some fabric choices I was thinking about using.
I've got a snail pattern and have the perfect swirling orange print for the shell, and an equally perfect swirling limey
green overdye for the body. I also had the problem of how to add lime green to the rctq BOM applique bee block. Mom
and I were thumbing through a quilt book and found the perfect solution--an apple in the background, only I'll make mine
green instead of the usual red. An odd thing happened while looking through my fabrics. We found two whole other
quilts for me to make. (Like I don't have enough quilt projects in my head and as WIPs.) Anyway we found 3 yards of
yellow with white dots works perfectly with 2 yards of blue with white and yellow flowers. I'm thinking about making
large, 12 inch, 4 patches out of those fabrics. The other quilt project discovery is that all the novelty prints I love
to buy could be used in a brick quilt. The colors I am drawn to the most in novelties all work nicely together and I
think they would make a wonderful bright fun, no math, brick quilt. Anyway, Mom and I had a few nice hours fondling
fabric, looking through quilt books, and talking about everything and nothing. Debra in VA See my quilts at
