Although I understand your point, for the same person to have TWO gone missing and spent locally? I think it's a
resident. I would look up the relevant laws & I would file a complaint officially at the post office & at the
police! Mail is sacred! Emilia who wishes her mother hadn't read her "love" letters when she was teen!

I'd be getting me a post-box at the post office ASAP I'd be inclined to put a note up saying that unfortunately someone
in the building sees fit to open/keep others mail. and remind them that is is theft and fraud. (looking up applicable
notes in the law to refer to. *and* I'd complain bitterly to the land lord till he/she put up separate mailboxes (on
the wall outdoors if necessary) in fact I would be inclined to tell my landlord that he/she should do something about it
or you will dock some of the rent till it's fixed, setting said docked rent on a separate account so as to show you are
not trying to pay less rent but that you are trying to get your mail delivered safely as is your right - it's not the
postman's fault you are not getting mail but the landlords for not having a proper way of getting the mail delivered for
the separate flats. this is of course IMNSHO and would be within the law in NL but I am of course not up to speed with
UK laws on this. now I do so hope your block makes it safely! -- Jessamy In The Netherlands Take out: _I love the

Every single time I have tried to complain, Royal Mail (local or not, including going through the consumer watchdog - I
forget the name) have said that they want the complaints to come from the sender of the mail (and Tesco just is not
fussed enough to do this). I did ask Tesco if I didn't need my card to use the coupons, they said no, but maybe that
is only for the points coupons? Frankly, even just the points coupons would have been nice... Thing is, it is not
likely to be some remote sorting office, since the coupons were redeemed just across the road from me - literally.

Thanks, Hanne in London [/quote:02a4e586df] Okay, here is my advice as a law student: Get yourself to Shelter,
a UK charity dedicated to helping tenants with their property problems. They have qualified lawyers paid to help people
just like you and me. I have had fantastic help from them before, and am going along again on Monday because I have a
leaking bath which is causing water damage to the floor, the wall and my fabric stash cupboard (!!!)... but the landlord
is in no hurry to fix it. We shall see what the legal advice is, and the amount of time which he can legally ignore
this problem once it has been brought to his attention. While you are trying to locate your nearest Shelter
branch (google them to find that) write a letter explaining that your post has been opened and on occasion stolen. Post
this to your landlord, but take a copy along to your meeting at Shelter. You want to start documenting what has been
happening. Try to remember when it happened before. You are right, you can't withhold your rent, but you can
take steps to ensure that your post and your personal property is protected. Can you receive more of your post
at your work? Good luck, and tell me how you got on. Shelter is a registered British charity, with donation
shops in the high street, and it is there for people like you! -- Jo in Scotland

Thanks everyone who joined in so far. This is what I will do: Put up a note asking people if they have also lost or
had opened mail lately - this could strengthen my (our) bargaining power with the landlords. And talk to my landlord
about getting a postbox just for me. If he doesn't move on this pretty quick, I'll go to Shelter like Jo suggested

Posted by Hanne Gottliebsen on Mon Sep 18, 2006 9:30 AM    Post subject: Re: OT - stolen mail

So, it turns out that my mail (or at least some of it) has been misdelivered (long saga, last year I kept getting mail
for same number, different street, now they are getting (some of) my mail). I know this because they put it back in
the mail with handwritten note to that fact on it. I lost a squishe! All but a few threads were missing from the
envelope - I'm trying to identify the sender. It was even in an apology bag from the Royal Mail that it had been found
opened. I called the Royal Mail - they decided to treat it as a misdelivery problem despite me pointing out repeatedly
that theft was involved. But true enough - we can't know who did the theft (within the mail system or not). I am
giving them one week to not have any more delivery problems, then I will call again to get a name address for written
complaint. I am considering talking to the police about the provably stolen mail (the coupons). Everything else could
be considered "only" lost in the mail, which unfortunately is normal here. Obviously with the misdelivery
problem, there is no point in getting a PO box, since I would need to do a redirect of my mail, and that is not likely
to work either (same non-technology used). Hohum - in the mean time, please do not send consolation prizes to my home
address, my college address is in the directory and seems perfectly safe. Hanne in London Hanne Gottliebsen
