It is possible to make a quilt without any handwork; everything can be done on the sewing machine. Piecing and applique
are, of course, done a block at a time. For your first quilt, start with something small and simple. Some of the Quilt
in a Day books are good for beginners, because the instructions are very detailed. Their Log Cabin, Irish Chain, Trip
Around the World, Rail Fence are all especially good for beginners. You can quilt on your regular home machine, but
large quilts do get bulky and hard to handle. There are a number of techniques for reducing the bulk. Besides the
books & websites others have mentioned, you might want to take a look at "Machine Quilting in Sections"
by Marti Mitchell. She's gives several techniques for reducing the bulk of a large quilt; most of the ideas are
documented in other places, but I haven't seen anything else that describes all of them in one place. I've used a
couple of her techniques -- before I bought the book. I've documented one such project at

There are several methods of quilting as you go. Here are links that have descriptions of several methods. Please note
that while I reseached this a while back, I have not tried all of them, nor do I have any of these books on the subject.
* With this method, individual blocks or sections of a quilt can be done. It does require some hand work on the back.
Georgia Bonesteel's series of books, already mentiioned by Patti. http://www.secretsof.com/content/624
http://www.acornhillquilts.com/quiltasyougo.pdf * A method that requires no hand sewing. The batting in one section is
separate from the batting in another section. In the shown example, the quilting was done across strips of blocks that
were sewn together. http://community.webshots.com/album/547387259nozWsW * There is a variation on the previous one, but
for some reason I cannot find the link for it this morning. First the blocks are sewn together in strips (width or
length of the quilt). A single section is quilted, but not to the edges. The batting for the next section is sewn to
the batting in the already quilted section. The top strip for the next section is sewn to the top of the already
quilted section. The backing strip for the next section is sewn to the bottom of the already quilted section. The next
section is smoothed, basted and quilted (if it is not the outer edge of the quilt, do not quilt to the edges). Repeat
as needed. * A sashing on the back covers the seams. This sashing is machine sewn and shows on the front.
http://www.treadleon.net/quiltshop/joiningblocks/joining.html * Betty Cotton developed a different method, as shown on
her web site. The result is a reversible quilt, that has some three dimensional ridges. Betty appeared on "Sewing
with Nancy". I think there were three episodes on her "Pinetree" quilt. http://www.quiltyard.com/ *
Julie Olson has a method that uses Steam-a-Seam 2 and a bias tape maker that is described in her book.
http://tinyurl.com/ecw6p I'm sure there are others, as quilters tend to be so innovative. Bev in TX Sharon & Jack

Welcome to you Sharon Yes, the method of completing individual blocks and sewing them together is quite a well-known
one. There are several books on the subject. The ones I know of (without hunting too far in my pieces of paper with
notes on!) are by Georgia Bonesteel. The one I have is called 'Lap Quilting Lives'; but I'm sure there is an earlier
one. There are several methods of joining the blocks - there is no single correct way. I hope you'll get lots of help
with online sites, from folk here, and have a great time making your first quilt. Start simple and small, and you have
far less chance of getting frustrated. Have fun. .. In message

that squishie sure felt nice this afternoon. Used to be that on tough Mondays, after school I would go to my LQS and
fondle the fabric. My LQS was closed by the time I got home today. But there was that squishie! Aaaaaaaaah . . . .

Right now I need something to take my mind off of my husband being stranded in Michigan with no transportation. You see

Snow? You have snow?? It's over 90 here today in Kansas! In the cool 60's and 70's last week. I may get to swim in
my pool when it's done after all. Cindy - where we shouldn't have snow yet, but it should be a lot cooler than this.

I know it's not much, but now they are dusted, blown out and oiled and ready to take that first stitch in oh such a long
long time. I pulled out my bits. The 3/4 strips that have got me frustrated and excited at the same time. I work on
them when there isn't anything else that calls me, but I have that urge to sew. I am about half way there with them. I
am going to have to do some collecting again soon of these lovelies, but at least I have enough to play for a while. Who
knew that it would take a bazillion itty bitty pieces of 3/4 inch wide strips to make back into a lap quilt sized piece
of fabric again?? On the other hand, think of it this way, those itty bitty pieces still cost money and with all the
ones I have put back together they could maybe measure out to be about 1.5 meters already! **I dont even want to think

Posted by Irrational Number on Mon Aug 21, 2006 4:41 AM Post subject: family reunion: quilt shops in Bend, OR
This is a couple of weeks late. DH's big family reunion is every two years and this year, they picked Sunriver, OR,
which is 20 miles south of Bend. It was fabulous seeing all the cousins and the kids had fun. Sunriver is about 40
miles from Sisters, so DH insisted that we make that trip to The Stitchin Post. I loved the store, but didn't have a
project in mind and the store was so huge with so many beautiful quilts hanging, so I wandered aimlessly and ended up
with a book and a calendar. Pillbug was very good; he sat on the bench at the front of the store and stimmed quietly.
Rocky fell asleep so DH stayed in the car with him. DH and the rest of the family were stunned that I went to The
Stitchin Post and did not buy fabric. I was a bit overwhelmed. Maryd was kind enough to post a list of stores in Bend
before I went, so I used that to figure out where to go next. I went to Sew Many Quilts... So Little Time. (The nice
thing about calling for directions in a small town like Bend is you can say "I'm in the parking lot at Fred's"
and they'll know exactly where you are!) This time it was just Rocky and me, so I was able to get some fabulous blue
fabric. We then went to Mountain Country Mercantile, which was absolutely lovely! Miles and miles of fabric. I got
another book. The day before we left, DH had to take his brother to the Greyhound station. Turns out the Greyhound
station was in Sisters, so the brother told DH to get some fabric for me. DH, ON HIS OWN, figured out a collection of
blue fat eighths for me!!! I was totally astounded when he came back in with the package. It was a great trip. The
reunion was wonderful enough, but to go to three quilt shops was a great bonus. -- Anita --

it's great to hear your SIL is home again with her kids :-) a few days rest will fix the tiredness! I had a nephew over
last weekend while my oldest went to my sisters and I was knackered afterwards too - no idea why as I am used to having
2 kids in the house and still had that number due to me and my sister swapping our eldest sons for the night. maybe it
was due to him being twice the age of my oldest. or that he sewed half a quilt in one day? (and I had to keep up with
pressing, cutting and pinning?) -- Jessamy In The Netherlands Take out: _I love the colour_ to reply.

& we dropped the kids off tonight. They were so happy to see mom and be back home. They colored some 'my little
pony' pictures today to give to mommy. SIL is exhausted but glad to be home. Hopefully in a few days they'll have an
idea of what caused the fluid build up in her lungs and hopefully it won't happen again. We are so tired it isn't
funny....just 'cause a couple of kids stayed with us for a few days. Geesh, I feel so _old_. -Irene --------------

Thanks Pat. I got that far too, but could not find Twisted Threads in the internet - and ringing is not really a
viable option from down here. At least not for a single pattern. I will sit up until the middle of the night and pay
overseas rates to chat to my friends, but not to try to order a single wall hanging pattern lol. The one and only
time I considered doing an order this way I got a very confused woman on the phone who finally admitted she had only
been working in the shop for three weeks and she really didn't know what she was doing. But she only admitted this
after about 20 minutes. I gave up on that order and said I hoped she had a nice day, and hung up. I now make it a
rule NOT to ring overdeas to order. If they can't take an order by email (I don't have my fax hooked up anymore) I
usually just look elsewhere or manage without. It's not like I can't live without another pattern lol I just
thought someone might have seen the pattern, that's all. -- Cheryl & the Cats in OZ o o o o

the thread on the S@S design, and followed a link to view some. Beautiful, and I've wanted to do one for a while. I went
to the link to get coloring pages for S@S, printed many 8x11 pages, and worked with colored pencils on about 4 different
color ways with different aspects of the design being accented. It was lots of fun!! I couldn't make up my mind which
one to do. Then, I followed a link to the Shakespeare in the Park. Well! I ordered the book last Friday(29th), got it
on Monday(2nd), and went fabric shopping on Thursday. Friday I started to cut, and got the cream strips cut. Saturday
was my "friendship group" quilter get together, and I cut the blue strips. Last night I subcut all the blue
pieces, and this afternoon I started the subcuts for the cream. Judy Martin's instructions don't use short cuts, and
since it's design is scrappy, I'm going by her directions. Onesy-twosy. I love the original quilt shown so much that I
tried to duplicate the types of fabrics they used. Lots of various prints, and some florals, etc. I usually lean toward
Batiks, so this is a departure for me, both in the fabrics and the assembly. Now look at what you guys have started
here! And me with a list of ufo's as long as my arm. Maybe by the time i have this finished, the wall elves will have

Howdy! Thank you, Donna. Tossed Salad & Scrambled Eggs is one of my favorites: http://tinyurl.com/r3lxg That
Kaffe Fassett fabric is so fun to play with, it just speaks, loudly. I couldn't decide which of the collection to buy,
so I sent a $check$ to Susan Allen, former RCTQer, owner of The Quilt Asylum in McKinney, Tx.. The gals at her shop
picked out a bunch of fat quarters from the KF shelves and sent them to me, last year. (I live 75 miles south of
McKinney and don't often get to that shop.) Some fellow quilters said I'd be crazy to put all those fabrics together in
one quilt. <g> Yeah! Shoppers at the Dallas Quilt Show exclaimed over the fabric, "but what on earth could
you do with it?!!?" Play. It's fun fabric. We talked here on the ng about the light weight of that shot
cotton; it was so easy to handquilt, I love it. I had called the warehouse at Glorious Color to ask about that
beautiful, soft yellow which was not listed on the website (but someone had sent me a sample of it so I knew it was
available). The guy at the warehouse was friendly, funny, and sent out the package that day. This was a delicious quilt
project, makes me smile, too. Btw, Summer Breeze is an octagon. Just worked out that way. ;-) Welcome back to the ng.

Good, good for you, Kate. I'm trying to be happy for you. My Bernina has been in for a 15-minute repair for 5 days.
I was giving a new shop a chance - I guess I have my answer. And yes, I remember when I had a Pfaff and the little

Do you want a close up of the beaded panel I did for the Enschede Quilt. I found one a little while ago. It would take
me a day or two to process it because I am feeling a little fragile. On Monday our 52nd wedding anniversary I sat down
to do some beadwork. Then my heart started thumping and went into irregular beat mode. Then I felt a heaviness in my
chest. DH rushed me to the hospital where I had my bypass and stents done. I had many tests done and was allowed home
yesterday. Fortunately no more damage done to my heart but I am still feeling a bit shaky. So need to take it easy for
a few days. Shirley In message <pE94h.6618$736.1355@newsfe16.phx>, Terbear <kenandteri@yahoo.com> writes

This is the first time I ever managed to mis-size something so badly. I am usually pretty good at considering the seam
allowances in my quilts. I figure my mind has been out in the ozone somewhere as of late. Well I am going to have
to either take off a row and then make a boarder or make another 7 blocks. I was leaning toward making the added
blocks until I discovered that I didn't have any more of the background fabric I use for the blocks. So now it looks
like I will be taking off a short row and putting a boarder around the rest of the finished top to make it the size I
want it to be. I am giving myself day or so to think it over. I may just try to match up the fabric and do more
blocks. First things first. I need to let the eyes size things up to be sure I am getting exactly the effect I want
for this quilt. julia "Kate G." <grovesfam@NOcomcastSPAM.net> wrote in message

it altogether --- you could lose several inches or more -- !! Been there... done that! Kate in MI "julia

well I thought I was going to be finished with the last of the quilt tops I was making today. The quilt top on the other
hand has other ideas. I vigilantly stitched together all the blocks I had made with the sashing in place. I then laid
the top out on the floor and to my amazement discovered it was going to need another complete row of blocks to be wide
enough. I still haven't figured out how it laid out right before the sashing on the floor and now it is way to
narrow???? Now this one is a first for me. Ah! not to despair.... I now have the pleasure of making another 9 blocks of
little cars to finish the quilt. julia [/quote:8b645c8e91]

I lived in Flagstaff from 1964 until 1988- and lived at the Grand Canyon from 1960 until 1964 having moved there from
from southeast Michigan on Lake Michigan. YES... there is a good chance of snow in Nov. and a very good chance it will
be cold. Flagstaff and the Canyon have very similar temperatures, but I'm thinking the Canyon is a bit higher in
altitude. (If you have asthma or any breathing issues the altitude and thinner air can cause breathing problems-
"normals" will feel more tired at that altitude, so take it easy if you plan any hiking, etc.) Their snow
removal is excellent and the snow that is left after plowing will usually melt off the roads by the next day while
remaining on the ground in other areas. It's something about the sun being so intense at that altitude??? It's
beautiful country, but you will miss the fall colors by about 2 months. You should have lovely warm weather in LV at
that time of year. How I envy you- I'd love to make that trip myself. I haven't been back there since 1989. :-(((
